They Hung Him On a Cross (by Leadbelly)
They hung him on a cross
They hung him on a cross
They hung him on a cross
For me

One day when I was lost
They hung him on a cross
They hung him on a cross for me

They whooped him up the hill
They whooped him up the hill
They whooped him up the hill
For me

One day when I was lost
They hung him on a cross
They whooped him up the hill for me

He never said among them word
They never said among them word
They never said among them word
For me

One day when I was lost
They hung him on a cross
They hung him on a cross
For me

They bit him in the side
They bit him in the side
They bit him in the side
For me

One day when I was lost
They hung him on a cross
They hung him on a cross for me

He hung his head and died
He hung his head and died
He hung his head and died
For me

One day when I was lost
They hung him on a cross
They hung him on a cross
For me

Josh Turner, "The Way He Was Raised"
Lyrics:He always wore those worn out flip-flops
Spent hours in his Daddy's workshop
he loved being on the water
Fishing with His friends
He always listened to the old folks
When they'd tell stories and crack jokes
Didn't talk back to his Mama
When she got onto Him

Oh, that's just the way He was raised
Had to finish all His chores 'fore He could go outside and play
they always went to church that's were he learned how to pray
And that's just the way He was raised

He grew His hair out when He got older
Grew it clear down to His shoulders
Started hanging with the outcasts
When He went off to town
Some called Him a troublemaker
Even some said a lawbreaker
No matter how they talked about Him
He never put nobody down

'Cause that's just the way He was raised
When people start to gossip, He'd just walk away
He always loved his neighbor no matter what they'd say
Oh, that's just the way He was raised

On a cross, on a hill
That longhaired boy was killed
All our sins washed away
When He walked out of that grave

Oh, that's just the way He was raised
there's no way we can measure
The sacrifice He made
He knew He had to die
For our debt to be paid
Oh, that's just the way He was raised

It took the hand of God to roll the stone away
And that's just the way He was raised
Yeah, that's just the way He was raised

Though this song never mentions the name “Jesus” specifically, by the end of the song you can tell that the song is about him. The lyrics at the beginning make it sound as if the man in the song is just a normal, everyday guy who likes hanging out with friends and fishing. It emphasizes that he was raised in a way that led him to lead a good life. When he was younger he attended church and didn’t talk back to his mom. Then as he got older he would hang out with outcasts and love everybody despite the negative remarks they made about him. Then, in the last three stanzas, it becomes more clear that the man in question is Jesus. Instead of a normal guy, the song concludes with the man as a sufferer and savior when it says that by his death,“all our sins washed away.”

Dailey and Vincent- By the Mark
When I cross over
I will shout and sing
I will know my savior
By the mark where the
nails have been

CHORUS:

By the mark where the
nails have been
By the sign upon his precious skin
I will know my savior
when I come to him
By the mark where the
nails have been

A man of riches
May claim a crown of jewels
But the king of heaven
Can be told from the
prince of fools

CHORUS

On Cal- vary’s Mountain
Where they made him suffer so
All my sin was paid for
A long, long time ago

CHORUS

“Dailey and Vincent” is a bluegrass band that sings both regular bluegrass and gospel bluegrass.  The song By the Mark is a particular gospel song that has connected with many people and been one of the most popular songs the band has ever done.   By the Mark is simply as song about the nail scars (marks) on Jesus’ hands from when he was crucified and suffered on the cross.  The song begins by talking about how happy we will be when we cross over into heaven and recognize Jesus by the marks on his hands.  The song identifies Jesus as a man by referring in their lyrics to Jesus as him.  The song states that a rich man can be identified by his “crown of jewels,” while Jesus can be identified from the “prince of fools.”  This statement implies that Jesus was simply a human who walked amongst other individuals who were sinners.  He paid the ultimate sacrifice by giving up his own life on the cross in order to pay for our sins.

Jesus
Jesus, help me find my proper place
Jesus, help me find my proper place
Help me in my weakness
'cos i'm falling out of grace
Jesus, Jesus

Motherless Children
Motherless children have a hard time when their mother's dead
Motherless children have a hard time when their mother's dead
Wanderin' round from door to door
They don't have no place to go
Motherless children have a hard time when their mother's dead

Some people say your sister will do when your mother's dead
Some people say your sister will do when your mother's dead
Some people say your sister will do
Soon as she marries, turn her back on you
Motherless children have a hard time when their mother's dead

Some people say your auntie will do when your mother's dead
Some people say your auntie will do when your mother's dead
Some people say your auntie will do
Make a start, then prove untrue
Motherless children have a hard time when their mother's dead

Your husband may do the best he can when your mother's dead
Your husband may do the best he can when your mother's dead
Your husband may do the best he can
but your husband don't understand
Motherless children have a hard time when their mother's dead

Jesus will be a father to you when your mother's dead
Jesus will be a father to you when your mother's dead
Jesus will be a father to you
Pain and sorrow he'll lead you through
Motherless children have a hard time when their mother's dead

Motherless children have a hard time when their mother's dead
Motherless children have a hard time when their mother's dead
Wanderin' round from door to door
They don't have no place to go
Motherless children have a hard time when their mother's dead

Motherless children have a hard time when their mother's dead

Solid Rock (by Bob Dylan)
Well, I'm hanging on to a solid rock
Made before the foundation of the world
And won't let go, and I can't let go, won't let go
And I can't let go, won't let go, and I can't let go no more.

For me He was chastised, for me He was hated
For me He was rejected by a world that He created
Nations are angry, coursed are some
People are expecting a false peace to come.

Well, I'm hanging on to a solid rock
Made before the foundation of the world
And won't let go, and I can't let go, won't let go
And I can't let go, won't let go, and I can't let go no more.

It's the ways of the flesh to war against the spirit
Twenty-four hours a day you can feel it and you can hear it
Using all the devices under the sun
And He never give up 'til the battle's lost or won.

Well, I'm hanging on to a solid rock
Made before the foundation of the world
And won't let go, and I can't let go, won't let go
And I can't let go, won't let go, and I can't let go no more.

Cold Jordan
Oh sinning is a gentilized journey, take Jesus as your daily guide
Though you may feel pure and saintly without Him walking by your side
And when you come to make your crossing at the end of the pilgrim's way
If you ever will meet your savior, you will surely meet him on that day

Now look at that cold Jordan, look at its deep water
Look at that wide river Oh heavy mighty billows roll
You better take Jesus with you, he's a true companion
Oh I'm sure without him that you never will make it home

That awful day of judgment is coming in the by and by
We'll see our Lord descending in the glory from on high
Oh, let us get in touch with Jesus and in the special love of God
And maybe ever get ready when he comes on Jordan's tide
Now look at that cold Jordan, look at its deep water
Look at that wide river Oh heavy mighty billows roll
You better take Jesus with you, he's a true companion
Oh I'm sure without him that you never will make it home

Now what you gonna do, Oh what you gonna say
Oh how you gonna feel when you come to the end of the way?

August Burns Red- Salt & Light
Show our eyes true color. We want to hear the trumpet roar...
We want to hear the trumpet roar... with words that trample the pagan’s cavalry.
Pummel the darkness with the light.

Hand in hand, side by side, we will march with full force.
With your words from our throats we will march with full force.

Words that will shake the earth and boil the seas,
trample the bones of the living dead as they roam the streets alone.
We go marching on. Let the trumpets roar. (Go...)

I’m the harbinger, not the author of these timeless words.
Led by the Comforter I sing to you.
And if my throat were to be cut from ear to ear, I hope that these words
would carry on in these songs that I pray you sing one day.
We sing for you. We sing for you. We sing for you. We sing for you.
We sing for you. We sing for you. We sing for you. We sing for you.

I believe the song's meaning is about carrying out the word of God, words that could shake the earth, and trample pagan's cavalry. The point that it is pagan's cavalry suggest the opposite of light, darkness. As a harbinger, the singer (and those he encourages to do the same) should relay the words of the comforter, the holy spirit.  The title alludes to parable of salt and light in Matthew 5:13-16. Jesus instructs that his followers be the salt of the earth - that which makes the earth palatable to God and others.  He also instructs them to be light meaning they are that which may illuminate word to non-believers.  August Burns Red wants to make sure the message is carried out - through music, to spread the word. They sing for you - the listener a different through screamo on how to be the salt and light to the world.

Just the other night a hometown football game
My wife and I ran into my old high school flame
And as I introduced them the past came back to me
And I couldn't help but think of the way things used to be

She was the one that I'd wanted for all times
And each night I'd spend prayin' that God would make her mine
And if he'd only grant me this wish I wished back then
I'd never ask for anything again

Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

She wasn't quite the angel that I remembered in my dreams
And I could tell that time had changed me
In her eyes too it seemed
We tried to talk about the old days
There wasn't much we could recall
I guess the Lord knows what he's doin' after all

And as she walked away and I looked at my wife
And then and there I thanked the good Lord
For the gifts in my life

Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers

Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he may not answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered

Some of God's greatest gifts are all too often unanswered...
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

The song “Unanswered Prayers” by Garth Brooks is one of my many favorites. It portrays a specific image of Jesus as God, but also as a friend that you can talk to. The song represents the idea that God has a different path for each person and that what you may want at a particular time may not be what God has in store for you. However, the song holds a positive message in that it says that everything happens for a reason and it will all work out in the end as long as you have faith. I thought of this song during the movie that we watched because it is often listened to during times of crisis. Not everything may go the way you want it to in life, but that doesn’t mean that God isn’t “there”. I think this is a pretty important lesson, especially for people who associate wealth and good fortune with the love of God.

If god had a name, what would it be?
And would you call it to his face
if you were faced with Him in all His glory?
What would you ask if you had just
one question?
And yeah, yeah, God is great.
Yeah, yeah, God is good.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
What if god was one of us,
just a slob
like one of us,
just a stranger on the bus trying to make his way home?
If God had a face, what would it look like?
And would you want to see
if seeing meant that you would have to believe
in things like heaven and
in Jesus and the saints
and all the prophets?
And yeah, yeah, God is great.
Yeah, yeah, God is good.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
What if god was one of us,
just a slob like one of us,
just a stranger on the
bus trying to make his way home?
Just trying to make his way home, back
up to heaven all alone.
Nobody calling on the phone,
'cept for the Pope
maybe in Rome.
Yeah, yeah, God is great.
Yeah, yeah, God is good.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
What if god was one of us,
just a slob
like one of us,
just a stranger on the bus trying to make his way home,
just trying to make his way home, just like a holy rolling stone?
Back up to
heaven all alone, just trying to make his way home.
Nobody calling on
the phone,
'cept for the Pope maybe in Rome.

This song doesn’t necessarily reflect construct God or Jesus but it describes to me how a Christian should act.  If God was one of us would we treat him like a king or like a random person on the street? It exemplifies the idea of the “Golden Rule” and the idea that we should treat everyone the same.  I believe the idea of this song came from a bible passage. I couldn’t find the passage but it was something like Jesus was supposed to stay with this man.  While waiting for Jesus to come this man turned down three people in need of a place to stay.  After three days the man asked Jesus why he did not come and Jesus replied, I came three times and you denied me.  It just goes to show that Jesus can be in anyone and everyone.  There is no definite answer of who the Holy Trinity is; we need to make that assumption ourselves.
