1.     Brian’s life in this movie parallels Jesus’ life as it is written in the Gospels. Brian and Jesus are born on the same night, which is the opening scene of the movie when the wise men visit the wrong child. These parallels continue throughout the movie in instances such as the Sermon on the Mount, feeding the hungry (with the berry bush), performing miracles (such as breaking one man’s vow of silence). All of these parallels however are shown in a comical light that represent the possibilities that the events written in the Gospels may not have gone quite as they were reported to have.

2.     Throughout the movie wit was used to poke fun of the actual society of Judea during Jesus’ time. One scene where this idea can be identified is the stoning. During this time in Judea, people were stoned for almost any reason if it went against the “rules”. In this scene when the accuser tries to state the offense of the criminal, he himself breaks the rules so eventually he is stoned instead.

3.     Through the comedy of this movie, the viewers are able to explore the possibility that the stories written in the gospels could have been fabricated to better appeal to their audience. In this movie Brian is just a normal guy who is worshipped for accidents and coincidences because everyone in Judea during this time was looking for someone to be their messiah. This may have been the same circumstances that Jesus’ story began, but the gospel writers wanted a leader so they fabricated the extent of these events. Although this movie is not centered around Jesus, the audience can see Jesus in Brian which can alter their perspective on Jesus himself.
